Pivot Fund Renews Support for Five High-Impact Newsrooms
February 27, 2025
Thanks to the support of our funders, The Pivot Fund is investing another $600,000 in grassroots newsrooms that are redefining local journalism and strengthening their communities. These investments are not just funding journalism—they are fueling economic sustainability, civic engagement, and life-changing reporting in historically underserved communities.
With your partnership, we are renewing support for five high-impact newsrooms: NotiVisión Georgia, Courier Eco Latino, BeeTV, Baltimore Beat, and 285 South. These outlets are proving that when local news is deeply embedded in the community, it has the power to drive policy change, increase civic participation, and build stronger, more informed communities.
Your funding enables these organizations to scale their reach, develop sustainable revenue models, and continue producing essential reporting. NotiVisión Georgia, for example, has won an Emmy for its investigative series on domestic violence and is now expanding its coverage of rural communities. BeeTV, a trusted news source in Central Georgia, is bridging racial divides and preparing to launch its first on-air newscast. 285 South has grown from a newsletter to a thriving media outlet covering immigrant and refugee communities, with reporting that has already led to tangible policy changes.
Baltimore Beat is not only expanding its editorial team but is also innovating new revenue streams, such as its Beat Boxes initiative and a partnership with Peabody Brewery to fund journalism through community collaboration. Meanwhile, Courier Eco Latino has launched a new obituary platform that will generate sustainable revenue.
“These newsrooms are proving that sustainable local journalism is possible when it’s rooted in community needs,” said Tracie Powell, CEO of The Pivot Fund. “We’re excited to continue supporting their growth and impact as they deepen their reporting and expand their financial sustainability.”
The impact of your investment is clear—local journalism is not just surviving; it is thriving. With your continued support, these grantees are setting a model for the future of independent media, demonstrating that financial sustainability and community-driven reporting can go hand in hand.
Thank you for helping us strengthen the local news ecosystem and ensuring that vital, community-based journalism continues to flourish.
