Webinar: Informing America’s Emerging Majority

Trusted local news is vital to a healthy democracy, yet communities of color remain underserved. In a recent session, panelists highlighted these challenges and explored potential solutions, with a special focus on Georgia, which hosted the Communications Network’s annual conference.

Presenters

  • Tracie Powell is CEO of The Pivot Fund, which invests in BIPOC-led publishers that have earned community trust. The first seven news organizations Pivot funded are in Central Georgia. 
  • Naomi Tacuyan Underwood became executive director of the Asian American Journalists Association shortly before the 2021 Atlanta shootings, whose victims were mostly Asian, underscored how much newsrooms need diverse staff for good journalism.
  • Fernando Soto is editor-in-chief of Pasa la Voz Noticias, which provides Spanish speakers in and around Savannah and Charleston with local news, weather, job postings, and other tools to participate successfully in American life.
